Global Coffee import – Import-Export Market REPORT

Foreword

As the global coffee industry enters a period marked by heightened volatility in supply and demand, shifting policies, and geopolitical uncertainty, the need for accurate, timely, and in-depth data has become critical for businesses, exporters, policymakers, and investors alike. This report is designed to provide a comprehensive overview of global coffee consumption and import markets, Vietnam’s competitive position, as well as the key trends and emerging risks shaping the future of the global coffee supply chain.

Structured into eight main sections, the report goes beyond presenting the latest figures—it offers in-depth analysis of influential factors such as production costs, futures contracts, the EU’s EUDR regulation, climate volatility, and the growing roles of countries like Vietnam, Brazil, Colombia, Indonesia and Uganda.

We hope this report will serve as a valuable resource, empowering businesses to develop informed strategies, seize new opportunities, and mitigate risks in the ever-evolving landscape of the global coffee trade.

1. The U.S. Coffee Market: Massive Scale, Evolving Preferences, And Market-Driven Trends

The United States remains the largest coffee consumer globally, both in total volume and market value. Coffee is deeply ingrained in American culture and daily life. With annual consumption nearing 1.3 million tons, equivalent to approximately 4 kg per person per year, the U.S. leads global per capita consumption among major economies. A recent Drivesearch survey reveals that 73% of Americans feel unable to start their day without coffee, underscoring the beverage’s essential role in both individual routines and the broader work culture—especially in urban centers where coffee consumption is most concentrated.

On an annual basis, the average American spends around USD 325 on coffee, with the highest spending observed among men aged 25–34. These figures reflect not just habitual consumption but also a willingness to invest in coffee as a lifestyle product.

1.1 Decoding Taste Preferences and Consumption Trends

Preference for Mild, Creamy Profiles: Unlike Northern Europeans who favor unsweetened brews, or Italians who prefer the bold bitterness of Espresso, 77% of American consumers prefer softened flavor profiles. U.S. drinkers commonly choose Arabica beans and enhance their coffee with milk, cream, sugar, or flavored syrups. This has not only shaped the core coffee market but also stimulated demand for complementary products such as dairy substitutes, plant-based creamers, and specialty sweeteners.

Health-Conscious Shifts: Post-pandemic wellness trends have sparked significant changes in how Americans sweeten their beverages. Increasingly, consumers are substituting refined sugars with natural alternatives:

– 19% now use honey

– 10% opt for agave syrup

– 7% prefer maple syrup

These shifts highlight growing interest in natural, functional ingredients and signal opportunities for product diversification in the coffee supply chain.

The Cold Brew Surge: The U.S. cold brew coffee market is projected to grow at a CAGR of 20% from 2025 to 2030. With its smoother taste, lower acidity, and convenience (especially in ready-to-drink (RTD) formats), cold brew is increasingly favored by health-conscious and younger demographics. This trend also intersects with rising demand for low-sugar, on-the-go beverage options.

2. Germany Coffee Market Overview: EU Leadership and Outstanding Consumption Trends

Germany remains the largest green coffee importer in the EU, handling around 33.9% of the bloc’s total imports. This translates to roughly 921,900 tons of coffee in 2024, supporting the country’s robust domestic demand and growing coffee processing and re-export industry.

Extensive Consumption Culture and Impressive Consumption Levels

Coffee is integral to German culture, with nearly 90% of the population consuming coffee daily. Per capita consumption reaches an impressive 169 liters per year, surpassing even the traditional beer consumption of about 90 liters per year, highlighting the central role of coffee in daily life.

The evolution of Germany’s coffee culture can be categorized into three key “waves”:

Wave 1 (1960s): Coffee became a popular mass drink, widely adopted by the population.

Wave 2 (1980s–1990s): The focus shifted toward premium brands and an enhanced in-store coffee experience, setting the stage for the country’s rising coffee culture.

Wave 3 (Current): Today’s trends emphasize sustainability, traceability, and a strong preference for speciality coffee, with a growing interest in diverse brewing methods.

Germany’s coffee market continues to evolve, moving towards a more conscientious and premium approach, positioning it as a leader in the global coffee scene.

……..

3. Finland: Global Coffee Consumption Champion

Finland leads the world in per capita coffee consumption, with an impressive 12 kg of coffee consumed per person each year. Coffee drinking is deeply ingrained in Finnish culture from an early age. Many Finns recall being introduced to coffee by their grandparents at around 5 to 7 years old. One Reddit user shared: “My grandmother made us coffee when we were still in school, which annoyed my mother because, at that age, we were only allowed to drink ‘silver tea’ (hot water, milk, and sugar). It wasn’t until I was about 15 that I started drinking coffee every morning and whenever it was served.” This reflects a broader trend, as a 2022 Statista survey found that a significant portion of young people begin drinking coffee daily at an early age, with 35% of women and 45% of men by the time they turn 12.

Consumption by Gender: Finnish men generally consume more coffee than women, averaging about 4.4 cups per day. This gender difference is most noticeable in the 18–44 age group, where men are 13% more likely to drink coffee daily than women.

Affordability: Finland’s high per capita income allows consumers to enjoy quality coffee, with prices ranging from 5 to 15 EUR per kilogram.

Favorite Brands and Tastes: The dominant coffee brand in Finland is Juhla Mokka by Paulig, which holds a 49% market share. This coffee is made from 100% Arabica beans sourced from Central America, South America, and Africa. It is lightly roasted (level 1/5) to preserve its delicate fruit flavor and fresh acidity.

Brewing Method: The Moccamaster drip coffee maker, a Dutch brand by Technivorm, is extremely popular in Finland, found in about 80% of households. The machine is favored for its ability to maintain a stable water temperature of 92–96°C, ensuring the optimal extraction of coffee flavors.

Vietnam – The World’s No. 1 Robusta Powerhouse

Total Supply And Demand Of Vietnam’s Coffee Industry From 2022 to 2025 Vietnam’s agricultural economy heavily relies on key commodities such as pepper, cashew nuts, and particularly coffee. As the world’s second-largest coffee exporter, trailing only Brazil, Vietnam commands approximately 19% of the global coffee market share and holds the title of the leading producer of Robusta coffee. The coffee industry is a critical pillar of Vietnam’s economy, providing jobs and income to more than 600,000 farming households, with about 2.6 million workers involved in the entire production process. This equates to about 4.8% of the country’s working-age population.

Figure 5: Vietnam Coffee Export by Volume – Turnover – Selling Price

Export Performance

Vietnam’s coffee export sector has shown remarkable growth, with turnover rising from 3 billion USD in 2021 and expected to hit a record high of up to 8 billion USD by 2025, according to USDA forecasts. The European Union (EU) remains a key strategic partner, accounting for XX% to XX% of Vietnam’s total coffee export revenue.

Table 10: Coffee Type Export of Vietnam (Source: USDA)

Vietnam’s Coffee Export Structure

Between 2022 and 2024, Vietnam’s coffee export structure underwent a significant transformation. While the export volume of green coffee declined by XX.X%, falling from 1.78 million tons in 2022 to 1.34 million tons in 2024, the export turnover increased sharply by XX.X%. This surge in value was primarily driven by a higher average selling price, a result of tight global supply conditions and growing market demand for quality coffee products.

Beyond market dynamics, this shift also reflects the effectiveness of Vietnam’s strategy to enhance value by limiting raw coffee exports and promoting the processing industry. The share of processed coffee—including roasted, ground, instant, and blended varieties—rose from X.X% in 2022 to X.X% in 2024, indicating a gradual but steady move toward higher value-added products. This upward trend continued into early 2025, with processed coffee exports in February reaching 123.61 million USD, accounting for XX.X% of total coffee export turnover.

Domestic Coffee Consumption in Vietnam

Vietnam’s coffee consumption has been on a steady rise over the past decade. According to the Vietnam Coffee and Cocoa Association (Vicofa), per capita coffee consumption has increased from 1.X kg in 2015 to nearly X kg in 2023. This trend is expected to continue, with particularly strong demand in the Southern regions, which have a higher coffee-drinking culture, while the Northern regions are still more influenced by the traditional tea-drinking culture.

The domestic coffee market in Vietnam is estimated to be worth XXX million USD in 2024, according to Euromonitor. This market is expected to grow at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 7.X% over the next several years, potentially exceeding XXX million USD by 2028. The forecast for the 2025-2030 period is even more optimistic, with average consumption growth projected at around 6.X% per year. The USDA estimates that coffee consumption in Vietnam will reach 3.X million bags in the 2024-2025 crop year.

Chart 5: Cost structure on revenue of coffee processing and exporting enterprises in Vietnam

Production and Processing Costs

In Vietnam, coffee purchasing, processing, and exporting enterprises face a unique cost structure, with the cost of raw coffee beans accounting for a dominant 85.XX% of total revenue. This significant investment in raw materials makes businesses highly sensitive to fluctuations in domestic and international coffee prices. Despite the high raw material costs, operating expenses such as labor, fuel, internal transportation, packaging, interest, and depreciation make up only 4.XX% of total costs, reflecting the industry’s stable and relatively low operating cost base.

Coffee Supply Chain Analysis in Vietnam

Vietnam’s coffee export supply chain is a multifaceted system, encompassing several stages from raw material production to the distribution of finished products to global markets. To ensure high-quality products at competitive prices, it is crucial to manage relationships effectively between farmers, buyers, processors, and export partners, while integrating technology throughout the production and distribution processes.

The coffee export supply chain in Vietnam can be broken down into key stages: coffee cultivation, intermediate purchasing, processing, export, and domestic and international distribution.

Farmers – Important Yet Vulnerable

Farming households form the backbone of Vietnam’s coffee industry, accounting for 80–95% of the nation’s coffee cultivation area and output. Despite this vital role, most of these households operate at a small scale, typically just 0.5 to 1 hectare, and rely largely on traditional farming knowledge. Limited access to modern technology, farming techniques, and mechanization has left them vulnerable to various risks, especially rising input costs. Fertilizers, pesticides, and manual labor remain their biggest production expenses, making smallholder farming particularly sensitive to fluctuations in prices and labor availability.

Intermediary Units – The Vital “Link” in the Coffee Supply Chain

In Vietnam’s coffee value chain, intermediary purchasing units play a crucial role in connecting farmers with processing and export enterprises. These units operate under various forms and scales, serving as an essential bridge between coffee production and the market. According to recent statistics from VICOFA and the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, there are at least 1,200 officially registered coffee purchasing units across the country, with approximately 85% concentrated in the Central Highlands—the heart of Vietnam’s coffee-growing region.
Based on research and field analysis in the Central Highlands, intermediary units can be classified into three main levels, each with distinct functions and responsibilities:

Analysis: Brazil – The World’s Leading Coffee Producer

Brazil’s journey with coffee began in 1727, when Francisco de Melo Palheta brought the first coffee plants from French Guiana, then a Portuguese colony. Initially, coffee cultivation was limited to small-scale plantations in the Pará region of northeastern Brazil. The crop was mainly for the modest consumption of the colonial aristocracy.

The turning point came in 1770, when the first commercial coffee plantation was established near Rio de Janeiro. Brazil’s combination of favorable climate and fertile soil laid the foundation for future export potential, especially to Europe. This was the beginning of Brazil’s transformation into a global coffee powerhouse.

The real boom for the “brown gold” industry came in the early 19th century. The Industrial Revolution and changing lifestyles in the United States and Europe created a surge in demand for coffee. While Brazil exported just 780 kilograms of coffee in 1800, by 1820 that figure had skyrocketed to nearly 12.9 million pounds (about 5,850 tons). Brazil quickly captured 30% of the global coffee market. By the 1840s, production had increased tenfold from 1820, cementing its position as the world’s leading coffee supplier.

This massive expansion was initially fueled by slave labor. After slavery was abolished in 1888, a massive wave of immigration – especially from Italy – filled the labor gap on coffee plantations. Coffee profits were reinvested in infrastructure, in particular the construction of an extensive railway network. These railways connected fertile inland growing regions such as the Paraíba Valley, west of São Paulo and south of Minas Gerais with major seaports such as Santos, greatly increasing export capacity.

Inventory and Supply Trends in the Brazilian Coffee Industry

In MY2023/24, Brazil reached a record total coffee supply of 71 million 60kg bags, mainly due to high opening inventories of 4.62 million bags. However, strong exports during the same period have caused ending inventories to decline sharply, reaching 1.685 million bags at the start of MY2024/25.

In MY2024/25, Brazil’s total coffee supply is forecast to decline slightly to XX.XX million bags, despite a strong forecast for harvest. This slight decline is mainly due to a sharp decline in opening inventories, which overshadows the positive impact from production, contributing to a tighter overall supply.

Notably, Brazilian farmers have already pre-sold approximately 88% of their 2024 coffee production before harvest. Taking advantage of high prices on international exchanges, farmers have taken early profits – reflecting both strong global demand and producer confidence. While high pre-sale rates are a positive sign, lower ending inventories could lead to a tightening market and put upward pressure on prices.

Brazil’s Coffee Acreage: A Decade of Change and Adaptation

As the world’s leading coffee producer, Brazil’s coffee acreage has undergone remarkable changes over the past decade, demonstrating its ability to adapt to economic fluctuations and environmental challenges.

2010–2020: The Decline

According to the Brazilian Agricultural Statistics Agency (Conab), Brazil’s total coffee area declined significantly between 2010 and 2020. The area fell by 17%, from 2.27 million hectares in 2010/2011 to 1.88 million hectares in 2020.

The main reason for this decline is the cyclical nature of Arabica coffee production. During low-yield years, Brazilian farmers often choose to prune or replace old, low-yielding trees, leading to a temporary reduction in the area under cultivation.

2020–2024: Signs of recovery

After bottoming out in 2020, Brazil’s coffee acreage has begun to recover. By 2020, the acreage had increased by 1.4% compared to 2019, reaching 2.16 million hectares. This recovery continues steadily, with the total acreage reaching around 2.27 million hectares in 2022/23. There will be a slight decline to X.XX million hectares in 2023/24, but overall the trend points to a return to growth.

Analysis of the Brazilian Coffee Supply Chain

The coffee procurement system in Brazil is essential for connecting farmers with processors and exporters. This system operates through two main channels: direct and indirect (via intermediaries), with differentiation based on farm size and logistics capacity. The structure of this procurement network is complex, with smallholders playing a dominant role in coffee production.
……

The role of cooperatives is crucial for smallholder farmers, with cooperatives contributing to 55% of Brazil’s total coffee production, according to the Brazilian Organization of Cooperatives (OCB). These organizations also create around 8.4 million jobs, both direct and indirect, underscoring their importance to the Brazilian economy. Additionally, cooperatives directly export about 35% of Brazil’s annual coffee production. This figure increases when accounting for coffee exported through trading companies or resold to processors.

Brazil is home to 1,400 cooperatives, 97 of which only focus on coffee cultivation and trading on a large scale, and hundreds specialise in multiple products. Some notable names in the coffee cooperative sector include Cooxupé, Expocaccer, Cocapec, Minasul, Coabriel, Cocatrel, and Coocamig, all of which have played pivotal roles in establishing Brazil’s dominant position in the global coffee market.

GLOBAL COFFEE MARKET COMPETITION TRENDS AND FORECAST CROP YEAR 2025 – 2026

The global coffee market in 2025 is likely to experience significant price volatility, primarily driven by speculative financial activities in futures contracts on major exchanges such as Liffe NYSE and ICE Futures. This speculative “vortex” is expected to create artificial price fluctuations, adversely affecting coffee producers in leading coffee-producing countries such as Vietnam and Brazil. In addition to hurting producers, these market manipulations could disrupt the global supply chain, ultimately putting both consumers and businesses at a disadvantage.

In 2024, speculative activity in the coffee futures market surged to unprecedented levels. Financial investors accumulated 380,000 tonnes of “paper” contracts to buy long robusta positions in September 2024 on the Liffe NYSE, equivalent to 38,000 lots—a record high for the market.

Data from ICE Futures indicates that trading volume for the May 2025 robusta contract reached 6,815 tonnes on March 9, 2025, reflecting a 45% year-on-year increase. Hedge funds represented 30% of long positions, which has contributed to artificial upward pressure on prices, particularly when combined with news of potential supply disruptions.

……

Red Sea Turbulence and Long-Term Impacts

With a global coffee supply chain that spans more than 70 producing countries and countless intermediaries, even minor geopolitical disruptions can have outsized consequences. The Red Sea—through which roughly 30% of global container trade and 8.8 million barrels of oil pass daily—remains a critical chokepoint for coffee logistics.

Initially, Yemen’s Houthi forces claimed to be targeting vessels linked to Israel or the United States. However, by March 2025, 63% of the ships attacked had no direct connection to the Israel-Hamas conflict. This shift signals a broader strategy of indiscriminate economic disruption, where even neutral-flagged vessels face similar levels of risk.

Recent intelligence indicates that the Houthis have relocated weapons caches to secure underground sites in northern Yemen—an adaptive response to prior US and UK airstrikes. Alarmingly, their military capability is expected to recover to 70% of pre-2024 levels by the end of 2025, suggesting that attacks on commercial shipping are likely to escalate, prolonging Red Sea instability into the medium term.

…..

In our opinion, the coffee market in 2025 – 2026 will be impacted by these factors:

  • Coffee Price Manipulation Mechanism Through Derivative Contracts
  • The Shift in Coffee Product Structure
  • Weather Impact on Coffee Production
  • Monetary Policy and Its Impact on the Coffee Industry
  • EUDR Delay Eases Short-Term Pressure, While BRI Reshapes Coffee Trade
  • Global Coffee Supply Chain Under Pressure from Geopolitical Conflict
