ABOUT VIETNAM PEPPER

Vietnamese pepper (Piper nigrum) has been cultivated since the 17th century, but the production and export of pepper truly gained momentum in 1997 when global market prices surged. Today, Vietnam is the world’s leading producer and exporter of pepper, known for its high quality and strong reputation. Moreover, the Vietnamese pepper industry is recognized as a market full of potential and promising future growth.

The remarkable growth of Vietnam’s pepper industry began between 1983 and 1990 when global pepper prices soared. The cultivated area increased significantly, from 400 hectares in the 1970s to nearly 9,200 hectares, and exceeded 50,000 hectares by 2004. From 2008 onwards, with pepper prices continuing to rise, cultivation areas expanded rapidly. By 2011, the price of black pepper reached a record $5,500-5,800 per ton, and white pepper fetched $8,000-8,500 per ton.

Climatic and ecological conditions favourable for pepper cultivation:

– Temperature: Pepper thrives in temperatures ranging from 20-30°C. Temperatures above 40°C or below 10°C can negatively affect its growth.

– Light: Scattered, diffused light is ideal for the plant’s physiological needs, supporting its growth, flowering, and extending the longevity of pepper gardens.

– Rainfall and humidity: Pepper prefers a hot and humid climate. A short dry period after harvest aids in flower bud formation, leading to synchronized flowering. Air humidity levels of 70-90% are essential, particularly during the flowering stage.

– Wind: Pepper plants prefer calm or gentle wind conditions, as hot, cold, or stormy winds are unfavourable for their growth.

– Soil: Pepper grows well in gently sloping land with a gradient of 5-10° to facilitate proper drainage. In Vietnam, pepper is grown on various soil types, including red basalt soil (Central Highlands and Southeast), sandy clay (Ha Tien, Phu Quoc), and alluvial soil (Mekong Delta), as well as grey soil (Southeast).
