Vietnam Banana products’ potential from sustainable consumption trend

Bananas are among the primary exports for many developing nations, largely due to their ease of cultivation and strong market demand. Economic studies indicate that each hectare of bananas can generate a value equivalent to 3.8 hectares of rice, 10 hectares of peanuts, or 6 hectares of chili. The entire banana plant can be utilized across various sectors: from food and animal feed to raw materials for dye production.

In addition to fresh bananas, international markets increasingly favor other banana-based products, including banana leaves, which are used as eco-friendly packaging alternatives to plastic bags in supermarkets, as well as for decor and handicrafts. Within Vietnam’s banana processing industry, popular products include dried bananas, banana powder, canned bananas, and banana smoothies. These items not only increase the value of fresh bananas but also help manage crop surpluses, extend shelf life, and meet diverse global market needs.

Current Status of Vietnam’s Banana Processing Industry

While processed agricultural products make up a significant portion of Vietnam’s export turnover, the level of deep processing for banana products remains low—less than 30%. Most exported banana products undergo only basic processing steps, such as cleaning, drying, or freezing, which results in lower added value. This limits the economic potential of Vietnamese bananas in the global market, as deep processing can substantially boost product value.

Currently, Vietnam’s banana processing industry produces items like dried bananas, banana powder, canned bananas, and banana smoothies. Of these, dried bananas generate the highest export turnover, yet their value is only around 1.4% of that of fresh bananas. Vietnam also exports other banana-based products, including banana juice, steamed bananas, banana hearts, banana candy, and frozen bananas, though these add relatively little to the industry’s total revenue.

To enhance the quality and value of processed bananas, both businesses and the government are increasingly investing in modern technology. Traditionally, bananas were dried using heat from firewood at temperatures of 80–90°C for 36 hours. This method often yielded lower-quality products with less appealing colors and contributed to environmental pollution, reducing product appeal in international markets.

With support from the Department of Science and Technology, some companies in Vietnam recently implemented advanced heat pump drying technology. This method allows a batch capacity of 1,000–1,200 kg of fresh bananas, yielding 300–400 kg of dried bananas with consistent quality. The process maintains a temperature of 60–70°C over 30–35 hours, reducing humidity to below 15% while saving energy (380 kWh per batch). The resulting dried bananas are more visually appealing and flavorful, and meet food safety standards, suitable for both domestic and export markets.

This heat pump drying approach has improved efficiency compared to traditional methods, cutting labor costs, ensuring food safety, shortening production time, and reducing environmental impact. This development signals promising growth opportunities for Vietnam’s banana processing industry, helping it better meet domestic demand and establish a presence in high-quality export markets.

Potential for Developing Banana Products in Vietnam

While the export turnover of banana products remains modest, Vietnam has successfully developed a range of valuable products from various parts of the banana tree, meeting both domestic and international market demands. According to specialized reports, each hectare of banana cultivation yields 30–40 tons of banana stems. On average, one ton of banana stems can produce 10–12 kg of raw banana fibers and 300 liters of banana juice.

Banana fibers are light, durable, water-resistant, and long-lasting, making them an ideal material for a variety of industries. These fibers are used in the production of handicrafts, money printing paper, wrapping paper, and even high-end materials for the automotive and yacht industries.

Artisans in Vietnam have creatively used banana fibers to produce an array of handicraft items, including handbags, baskets, trays, carpets, lanterns, paper flowers, and household utensils. These unique, eco-friendly products are not only popular in the domestic market but also have a growing export presence in countries like the European Union, South Korea, and Taiwan.

The banana fiber industry has flourished in countries such as the Philippines and India. According to Euro Monitor, the global banana fiber market has experienced an impressive growth rate of 16–30% annually over the past decade. Vietnam’s banana fiber offers distinct competitive advantages, including its softness, smoothness, and luster—qualities that make it comparable to India’s premium banana fiber, which is priced twice as high as fibers from other countries, including the Philippines.

Banana Leaves – A Potential Market

Vietnam’s banana leaves were first exported around 2009, primarily to Asian countries where they were used to wrap cakes. In recent years, as global awareness of environmental issues and sustainable development has grown, banana leaves have emerged as a valuable product, generating an estimated revenue of 0.84 – 1 million USD annually.

To be suitable for export, banana leaves must meet high-quality standards. The leaves should be at least 30 cm wide, free of tears, and predominantly made of intact banana leaves. Given their fragile nature, the harvesting process demands expertise in selecting leaves of the right maturity and drying them just enough in the sun to preserve their green color and prevent them from becoming too brittle.

In East Asian countries like Japan, Korea, and India, banana leaves have long been used to wrap cakes and food, a tradition that has existed for thousands of years. In Europe and the United States, banana leaves have gained popularity for food decoration and packaging, particularly as supermarkets increasingly restrict the use of plastic bags.

As a result, Vietnam’s banana products industry—including banana fibers and leaves—holds significant potential. By leveraging its competitive advantages and increasing investment in deep processing technologies, the country can capitalize on the growing global demand for green and sustainable products, tapping into markets that prioritize eco-friendly solutions in food packaging and decoration.

Global Market Trends and Opportunities for Vietnam in the Banana Processing Industry

In 2023, Vietnam exported approximately 7,660 shipments of banana products, with 98% being fresh bananas after preliminary processing, mainly to major markets such as China, Korea, and Japan. Although deeply processed banana products still represent a small proportion of export turnover, Vietnam has significant potential to expand its banana product portfolio. This growth can increase product value and align with the global trend toward green consumption.

Banana Fiber – A Key Opportunity in the Sustainable Production Market

The global banana fiber market is expected to reach around 50 billion USD by 2031. In Vietnam, banana fiber exports surged after the COVID-19 pandemic, drawing attention from businesses in the Middle East that import raw banana fiber for fabric production. Additionally, Vietnamese banana fiber has been used in the creation of handicraft products, sold on international platforms such as Etsy and Amazon, or supplied to hotel and motel chains abroad.

With sustainable production regulations set to take effect in the global textile industry by 2025, businesses will be required to transition to using natural, eco-friendly fibers. This presents a significant opportunity for Vietnam to develop and promote products made from banana fiber. Not only is banana fiber a viable alternative to traditional fibers, but its durability, lightness, and water-resistant properties make it highly suitable for high-tech applications, aligning with the growing demand for sustainable and environmentally friendly materials.

Biodegradable Masks from Banana Fibers – A Green Solution for the Future

Every month, the world uses approximately 129 billion masks, most of which end up being disposed of by burning or burying, contributing to environmental pollution through CO2 emissions. To address this issue, biodegradable masks made from natural fibers, including banana fibers and banana leaves, have been proposed as a sustainable alternative. These banana fiber masks are not only environmentally friendly but also cater to the growing consumer demand for eco-conscious products.

Future Outlook for Enterprises Importing Goods from Vietnam

As global demand for eco-friendly products rises, importing enterprises have an opportunity to leverage Vietnam’s abundant raw materials to import green products, particularly those derived from bananas. Vietnam’s tropical climate and favourable geographical conditions make it an ideal source for banana-based products, including banana fiber, banana leaves, and processed banana goods. These products are aligned with the global trend toward sustainable consumption and offer diverse applications across industries such as handicrafts, fashion, packaging, and healthcare.
